After a long period of behind-the-scenes discussions and planning, we are pleased to announce that we are on the verge of securing a deal to save the Picture House (formerly Co-op Funeralcare) in the heart of Chorlton. We have agreed an outline plan with Southway Housing Trust alongside our development partner Brook Finch Farmer, and have a plan of action for how to proceed with the Stayin Alive project.
We want to save the Picture House from demolition for flats and bring it back into life as a venue in the district centre for local residents and visitors. This is a community-led initiative by the Chorlton Community Land Trust, and we want to offer local residents the opportunity to invest in this asset and our high street.
We have a lot of work to do over the coming year to make the plan a reality, but with local energy and financial backing we can create a new venue at the heart of our district centre that:
– Attracts jobs and businesses to help the Chorlton district centre thrive.
– Creates an open and welcoming place where residents and visitors can enjoy time together.
– And provides the community with a chance to have a real stake in the future of Chorlton.
We will be applying for some grant money from government and resurrecting our pledge drive (from 2019) to offer community shares to local investors.
We are holding an event on 29th May at The Edge Theatre. Please come along to show your support and find out more about our plans.
